Thailand Leads in Agoda’s ‘Europe to Asia Summer Travel Trends’

With summer holidays on the horizon for Europe, a fresh report from digital travel platform Agoda shows that Asia continues to shine brightly on the radar of European tourists. Once again, Thailand leads the pack as the most searched destination in Asia, maintaining its number-one position for a second year running.

Hot on Thailand’s heels are Indonesia, Japan, and Malaysia, while Vietnam breaks into the top five for the first time—marking a shift in European travelers’ interests across the region.

Agoda’s “Europe to Asia Summer Travel Trends” study reflects accommodation search patterns for trips planned during July and August, when Europeans typically set out for their long-awaited summer breaks. Among the standout performers this year, Malaysia has seen the most dramatic growth, with search volume jumping 20% year-on-year. China also benefited from the introduction of visa exemptions for several European countries, resulting in a 14% increase. Sri Lanka, too, enjoyed a healthy 13% surge in interest.

From Europe, the biggest sources of travel searches for Asia continue to be the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands. However, emerging enthusiasm from markets such as Greece (+23%), Turkey (+21%), and Poland (+17%) signals that more corners of Europe are turning their gaze eastward.

For Agoda’s Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President of Supply, the continued popularity of countries like Thailand and Indonesia isn’t surprising, offering as they do everything from tropical beaches to dynamic cities.

When zooming in on specific locations, Bali retains its crown as the most searched individual destination, while Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, and the island of Koh Samui follow closely. Interestingly, Koh Samui’s leap into the top three—nudging out Tokyo—may be linked to its recent starring role in HBO’s hit series The White Lotus, which captured the imagination of viewers worldwide.
