Phuket May Launch Beach-to-Airport Boat Taxi Service This Year

A new water transport option could soon ease traffic woes in Phuket, as boat taxis linking popular beaches with the airport are expected to launch before the end of the year, according to a senior Marine Department official.

Surachai Burapanonthachai, head of the department’s planning division, said the service might be introduced within the next four months, providing a more efficient alternative for getting around the island.

The initial route would likely connect western beaches—such as Patong, Kata, and Karon—with Phuket International Airport. The estimated travel time for the boat ride is around one hour, Surachai noted.

This initiative stems from discussions held in January between Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, government authorities, and local business stakeholders. The primary aim is to reduce traffic congestion, especially along the heavily used roadways between the airport, Phuket Town, and tourist hotspots.

Surachai also mentioned plans to expand the service to Phuket’s eastern coastline in the upcoming fiscal year. Since monsoon conditions often impact the west coast, the eastern route could provide a more stable year-round option. Potential pick-up points for this phase may include Cape Yamu, Koh Kaew, Cape Hin, and Ao Por.
