When you travel quietly up in the lift to the tenth floor of the no-nonsense office building in Stanley Street and pop out into the dimly lit, colourful Veggie4Love, it feels as if you’ve entered some exclusive club. With its low-level lighting and intimate space, you can see why Veggie4Love is so popular with couples – a fact that inspired the restaurant’s name. Once your eyes have adjusted to the semi-darkness, you can fully appreciate the lively museum that this retro American-style diner dresses itself as. The antique Americana that fills the cosy place even includes an old-style TV set playing some black-and-white show. To ensure you’re fully transported, Elvis Presley croons away in the background. An internationally inspired vegan menu – Vietnamese, Singaporean, Indonesian, Korean – is divided into starters, burgers and mains, with a small selection of desserts: ice cream; poached pear with avocado sauce; chocolate molten cake; and almond tofu. On the drinks menu are shakes, mocktails, alcohol-free beer, Coke, water and a selection of tea. With limited seating for around 35, the dozen or so tables quickly fill up, so reservations for one of the two daily dining times (see below) are recommended. Note that walk-in guests are required to pay cash.
