If you’re new to veganism or you’re just looking for a vegan film fix over the holidays, we’ve cherry-picked some big-daddy docus for your festive edification. The films range from the life-affirming to the life-annihilating (the weak-stomached should pick their flick with care), but are all for the same good cause. So once the crackers have all been pulled and you’ve exhausted the Christmas games, flip through this mini filmography for something that takes your fancy.
The Game Changers
If you enjoy the sound of myths being busted, The Game Changers should plant a seed. Making mincemeat of the ‘real men eat meat’ mentality, the documentary dives into the world of plant-based athletes and addresses the age-old protein issue that prevents so many meat-eaters from converting to veganism.
Forks Over Knives
Forks Over Knives (or diet over surgery, to decode the title) takes a look at the wholefood plant-based diet and its role in improved health and wellbeing. Drawing on decades of research, the film includes personal stories to back up the claims made and is a good source of inspiration for anyone that has yet to be convinced of the benefits of going vegan.
Earthlings
While Forks Over Knives is the dangling carrot of dietary change, Earthlings is the stick that will strike you to the core. Narrated by long-time vegan Joaquin Phoenix, Earthlings goes undercover to reveal factory-farming conditions that are both shocking and heartbreaking in equal measure. If you need an ethical reason to go vegan, then look no further. Not for the faint-hearted.
Vegucated
If you prefer personal stories to presented facts, then join three meat-eating New Yorkers in their six-week vegan experiment. Along the way, the guerrilla-style Vegucated examines the origins of omnivorism, the resistance towards veganism and modern farming practices.
Planeat
Gastronomes will appreciate Planeat’s particular veganism focus: the eating part. While the film covers the positive effects that a vegan diet can have on health and the environment, it’s a lighter treatment of the subject of the whole vegan movement, and inspirational fodder for all would-be vegan cooks out there.
Vegan: Everyday Stories
Light on the science, Vegan: Everyday Stories takes a peek at the lives of four ordinary but very different vegans, from an ultramarathon winner to an eight-year-old changemaker. With heartwarming tales and compassion for animals, Vegan: Everyday Stories is as mood-lifting as it is motivational.
