A vital source of income for many, a job can be a source of misery too, with the dull routine of work turning even the most tolerant of us into a bunch of zoned-out zombies. And as we spend most of our lives at work, a boring job can leave us feeling cheated: robbed of our sleep, our freedom, our energy and our time.

So to help lighten the load during the daily grind and make your nine-to-five less nightmarish, here are five boredom-beating tips you can work on.

See the bigger picture

Look for the meaning in the madness. What is it your job is giving you, apart from a week-long headache? Whether it’s to provide for your family, fund a hobby or just put a roof over your head, making a connection between the effort you put into your work and what it’s providing in return may help you put up with the frustrations of your job.

Focus on the benefits

Look beyond the obvious here. Aside from the health insurance or subsidised meals, consider any pluses you may be overlooking, such as a change of environment or exercise, even if it’s just the short walk to the stationery cupboard. And how about the social interaction? Among the devils and the dragons, there are usually one or two people we gel with at work. Value those chats at the water cooler.

If you can’t get out of it, get into it

Sometimes, if you can’t solve a problem, the only solution is to face it head-on. Rather than focusing on the drudgery of the day-to-day, see the pleasure in doing the very best you can do, whether it’s a task you complete or the joy you spread in the workplace. If you go home with a sense of fulfilment at having done something good or well, you’ll know this method is working for you.

Think of it as a stepping stone

Consider that your situation may only be temporary, with a promotion at work or a change of job on the horizon. If you can see no light at the end of the tunnel, there may still be things to look forward to, be it a new home, a holiday or that car you’ve always promised yourself.

Be in the momentMan stares lovingly at pencil.

Boredom can come from not being in the present; we’re either looking back to the cosy bed we’ve left or looking ahead to clock-out time. This leads to feelings of agitation and an urgent desire to fast-forward through our toils. Focusing on the here and now is a way to calm those thoughts down. To help with this, try to notice the little details of your day: the feel of your chair beneath you; the hum of the office air conditioner; the smell of that coffee on your desk. Let your senses guide you into a world of timelessness and away from the misery of clock-watching.

How we earn a living in life may be largely beyond our control, but we have the power to change how we feel about it, and following the above tips can go a long way to improving your mood and mindset to help you cope better with any boredom at work.
