Bangkok Airways is the latest airline to weigh its passengers before boarding.
To comply with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand’s regulations, a weight survey is being conducted from 15 September to 31 October 2023 by recording the weight of each passenger at the boarding gate.
It follows a similar move by Korean Air and Air New Zealand, who began putting passengers on the scales back in August and June respectively.
The practice of adding your personal measurement to the weight of your baggage is said to be crucial for the safe operation of flights and to ensure that the maximum take-off weight is within safety limits, rather than relying on ‘assumed mass’.
Some, though, would prefer that details of their mass remain assumed, although Bangkok Airways insists that the data collected from all passenger weighing will be kept confidential.
So how do you feel about passenger weighing? Is the collection of such data for a safer flight a considerable weight off your mind, or is it too heavy-handed an approach?
