If animal welfare and saving the planet aren’t big enough motivators to go vegan, a new carrot is being dangled before the dyed-in-the-wool world that might make even the most immovable of meat-eaters think twice: it also saves you money.
In fact, the savings are no small potatoes, with vegans able to slash their bills by a third, according to an Oxford University study Oxford.
The study, in which the cost of seven sustainable diets were compared with the typical diet in 150 countries, focused on whole foods and excluded highly processed meat replacements, restaurant meals and takeaways.
After vegan diets, vegetarian diets were found to be the next cheapest, followed by flexitarian diets, with cost reductions of 17–27% and 12–14% respectively.
The results, though surprising to many, were echoed by chef and bestselling author Miguel Barclay, who emphasised that ‘vegan and vegetarian meals consistently come in at a much lower price than recipes with meat’.
So if you want to be kind to animals, the planet and your pocket all at the same time, you now have three good reasons to go vegan!
