Brighton has won the title of the most vegan-friendly city in the UK, according to a study carried out by railway company London North Eastern Railway (LNER).
The popular seaside resort topped a list of 20 of the UK’s biggest cities, beating even London, which had previously held the title of the world’s most vegan-friendly city for four years in a row.
Basing its research on Google searches, data from online food delivery company Deliveroo and the listings of vegan and vegetarian restaurant guide HappyCow, LNER gave each city a ranking out of a total score of 100.
Brighton, achieving an impressive 86.9 out of 100 in the study, was shown to have the highest number of vegan restaurants (7.9) per 100,000 people, with local demand for vegan food having increased by more than 50% in the last two years.
In second place was Manchester, with 64.9, followed by Bristol and Edinburgh, with 59.9 and 54.5 respectively. London, the UK’s biggest city, came in fifth, scoring 39.4.
LNER’s study also revealed a rising trend in veganism across the country as a whole, with searches for vegan terms having increased by more than 80% since 2021.
In support of Veganuary 2024, LNER is serving four new vegan menus as part of its onboard food offering in first class, in addition to the vegetarian and vegan food items in its standard menu.
