From September 27 to October 8, 2025, the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom will be the setting for Thailand’s iconic Illuminated Boat Festival, newly elevated to international recognition as part of the country’s Thai Soft Power initiative.
Festival Highlights
- Grand Illuminated Boat Contest – On October 7, all 12 districts of Nakhon Phanom will present spectacular floating boat creations, making it the largest competition of its kind.
- Nightly Entertainment – Dazzling light and sound shows, fireworks displays, and colorful parades.
- Cultural Showcases – Traditional performances fused with modern artistry.
- Spiritual Traditions – The 12-Zodiac-Year Merit-Making Ceremony at Phanom Naka Courtyard.
- Local Experiences – A bustling fair with food stalls, live music, and unique OTOP (One Tambon, One Product) crafts.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the event is designed to position Nakhon Phanom as a cultural hub of the Mekong region, attract international attention, and boost local economic opportunities.
