Koh Phangan’s Full Moon Party: Thailand’s Ultimate Beach Rave

Thailand’s most iconic party doesn’t happen in Bangkok’s clubs or Phuket’s beach bars; it takes place under the moonlight on a small island in the Gulf of Thailand. The Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan is a world-famous celebration that draws thousands of travelers each month to dance, drink, and let loose on the sands of Haad Rin Beach.

So in celebration of International Moon Day, here’s everything you need to know about Thailand’s original lunar knees-up.

🌕 The Origins: How It All Began

The Full Moon Party started in the late 1980s, when a group of backpackers threw a birthday bash on the beach for a friend. The combination of moonlight, music, and waves created such a memorable night that they decided to do it again—and again. Word spread, and over the years, what was once a gathering of a few dozen people became a global party phenomenon.

Today, it attracts 10,000 to 30,000 partygoers each full moon, with major events during holidays, like New Year’s Eve and Songkran (Thai New Year).

🎧 What to Expect: Music, Madness, and Moonlight

The Full Moon Party takes place along Haad Rin Nok Beach, a long, curved stretch of soft white sand lined with beach bars and sound systems. The party officially starts after sunset and goes on until dawn.

Here’s what’s waiting for you:

  • 🎶 Music Zones: Every bar has its own sound system and DJ, playing everything from EDM, trance, and techno to hip-hop, reggae, and even drum & bass.
  • 🔥 Fire Shows: Local performers twirl flaming ropes, staffs, and poi with jaw-dropping skill. Fire skipping ropes and hoops are popular, but be cautious—they’re not for the faint-hearted.
  • 🎨 UV Paint: Get painted in glowing neon designs—it’s part of the party uniform.
  • 🍹 Buckets: The infamous Thai “bucket” consists of a small pail filled with liquor (usually local rum or vodka), soda, and energy drinks—often shared among friends (or strangers).
  • 🏖 Sunrise Swim: Many partygoers end the night with a dip in the ocean as the sun rises over the horizon.

📅 When Is It?

The Full Moon Party happens every month on the night of the full moon, except during major Buddhist holidays (when it may be rescheduled to the night before or after).

🚤 How to Get There

Koh Phangan doesn’t have its own airport, so most visitors arrive via Koh Samui or the mainland.

From Koh Samui:

  • Fly into Samui Airport (USM).
  • Take a ferry from Big Buddha Pier or Maenam Pier to Haad Rin (30–50 minutes).

From Surat Thani (mainland):

Once on Koh Phangan, Haad Rin is about 20–30 minutes by taxi or songthaew from the main ferry pier at Thong Sala.

🏠 Where to Stay

  • In Haad Rin: Ideal if you want to be in the middle of the action, but it can be noisy. Book weeks in advance for full-moon dates.
  • Ban Tai or Thong Sala: A bit quieter, and only a short ride from Haad Rin. These areas also host pre-parties like the Jungle Experience and Waterfall Party.

Tips for a Safe and Fun Night

  • 🎒 Travel light: Don’t bring valuables. Use a waterproof pouch for your phone and cash.
  • 💧 Stay hydrated: The heat-and-alcohol combo can be intense.
  • 👟 Wear proper shoes: Broken glass and sharp rocks aren’t uncommon on the sand.
  • ♻️ Be respectful: Don’t litter. The beach and island are homes to locals and wildlife.
  • 🚫 Skip the drugs: Drug laws in Thailand are extremely strict, and enforcement is heavy during the party.
