With the arrival of April, you might have thoughts of traveling in Thailand, either to escape the heat of the big city or to find somewhere more laid-back to celebrate the Thai New Year, Songkran.

April is the hottest time of year in Thailand, and most of the country experiences temperatures well above 95°F (35°C). That said, some destinations are noticeably cooler — or at least more comfortable — than Bangkok. So if you’re seeking some relief from the stifling humidity, here are some of the best places in Thailand to escape the worst of the city heat.

⛰️ Northern Thailand (Best for Cooler Temperatures)

If you’re looking for genuinely cooler weather, head north — and go up in elevation.

Chiang Mai

Mon Cham, Chiang Mai in Thailand.

Thailand’s most popular northern city is slightly cooler than Bangkok, typically by a few degrees. While daytime temperatures can still be high, the lower humidity and cooler evenings make it much more comfortable.

👉 Best for: Culture, food, and access to nearby mountains

Chiang Rai

Even less dense and slightly cooler than Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai offers a more relaxed atmosphere with better airflow and fewer urban heat effects.

👉 Best for: A quieter, less touristy experience

Doi Inthanon

Doi Inthanon landscape in Thailand.

This is the coolest place in Thailand. Thanks to its elevation, temperatures here can be 10–15°C (18–27°F) lower than Bangkok temperatures. In the early morning, it can even feel genuinely cool.

👉 Best for: Nature lovers and anyone who really wants relief from the heat

🌿 Pai (Laid-Back and Slightly Cooler)

Yun Lai Viewpoint located in Pai, Thailand.

Pai is a small mountain town north of Chiang Mai known for its relaxed vibe and scenic surroundings. While it’s not dramatically cooler during the day, it:

  • Feels more comfortable overall
  • Has cooler nights
  • Offers a slower, more laid-back atmosphere

👉 Best for: Relaxation and escaping the intensity of big cities

🌊 Coastal Cities (More Comfortable, Not Cooler)

If you don’t want to head north, coastal destinations can feel better, thanks to sea breezes.

Hua Hin

Pattaya

These places have similar temperatures to Bangkok, but:

  • Ocean breezes help reduce the heat
  • Evenings are more pleasant
  • The overall experience feels less intense

👉 Best for: Easy getaways from Bangkok

🏝️ Southern Islands (Breezy but Still Hot)

Koh Samui

Phuket

Patong Beach in Phuket, Thailand.

Island destinations offer:

  • Sea breezes
  • Beach access
  • A more relaxed environment

However, temperatures are still high in April, so don’t expect a huge drop; just a more bearable kind of heat.

👉 Best for: Beach holidays with a slightly cooler feel

🌡️ What to Expect in April

Across most of Thailand in April:

  • Daytime temperatures: 95–104°F (35–40°C)
  • High humidity in many areas
  • Very strong sun, especially midday

👉 The key difference between destinations is how the heat feels, not just the temperature.

🧭 Where Should You Go?

  • For actual cooler weather:
👉 Head to the mountains, like Doi Inthanon
  • For slightly cooler and more comfortable cities:
👉 Try Chiang Rai or Pai
  • For a more comfortable (but still hot) experience:
👉 Choose coastal spots like Hua Hin
