Thailand has been named one of the best countries for expats in 2025, ranking fourth overall in a global survey by InterNations that highlights affordability, happiness, and quality of life. The list reflects a growing trend of people choosing to live abroad, with international migrants now making up 3.6% of the world’s population, according to the World Migration Report.

InterNations surveyed more than 10,000 expats from 172 nationalities and found that the highest-ranking countries combine strong personal finances with quality of life and an easy transition for newcomers. In 2025, the top destinations span Latin America and Southeast Asia, offering a mix of affordability, friendly communities, and appealing lifestyles.

Panama topped the list, ranking first overall, thanks to its strong performance across all major categories, including working abroad, personal finance, and quality of life. Popular with retirees, freelancers, and digital nomads, Panama is praised for its natural beauty, outdoor lifestyle, and expat-friendly policies, though bureaucracy can be a challenge.

Colombia placed second, earning high marks for personal finance and ease of settling in. Expats report feeling welcomed and financially comfortable, with many highlighting the country’s strong sense of community, family-oriented culture, and growing opportunities, particularly in cities like Cartagena and Medellín.

Mexico ranked third, standing out for its friendliness and ease of making connections. Expats frequently mention the country’s culture, cuisine, healthcare, and relatively low cost of living as major advantages. Reliable internet and diverse locations — from beach towns to major cities — have also made Mexico a favorite with remote workers.

Thailand, in fourth place, scored especially well for overall happiness and personal finance. Expats consistently praise the country’s welcoming nature, vibrant expat communities, modern infrastructure, and access to beaches, mountains, and cultural experiences. While English is widely spoken, cultural sensitivity and respect for local customs are seen as essential to settling in successfully.

Rounding out the top five is Vietnam, which ranked first globally for personal finance. Expats point to the country’s fast-growing economy, energetic atmosphere, affordable lifestyle, and renowned food scene. Cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc continue to attract newcomers seeking opportunity and value.
