Bangkok’s contemporary arts scene takes center stage from July 31 to August 2, 2026, as the 28th ASIATOPIA International Performance Art Festival arrives at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). Held in the Studio Room on the fourth floor, this internationally recognized festival brings together artists from across Asia and beyond to showcase thought-provoking live performance art under the theme “Actions Speak Louder Than Words.”
Inspired by the message “When you speak and nobody listens, then just do it,” this year’s festival explores how actions, movement, and creative expression can communicate ideas more powerfully than words. Through live performances, artists use their bodies, materials, and the surrounding space to examine social, cultural, and personal issues while challenging audiences to see familiar subjects from new perspectives.
Unlike traditional exhibitions, performance art unfolds in real time, making the artist’s physical presence, actions, and interaction with viewers an essential part of each work. The festival encourages visitors to engage with the performances openly, recognizing that there may be no single interpretation and that the audience itself becomes part of the experience.
Founded in 1998, the Chiang Mai-based ASIATOPIA organization has grown into one of Asia’s leading performance art festivals, welcoming more than 300 international artists to Thailand over nearly three decades. The festival serves as a platform for artists from across the region and around the world to explore contemporary issues through performance while fostering dialogue and creative exchange.
This year’s program features artists from Sweden, Singapore, Mongolia, Spain, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Thailand, alongside an Artists Exchange Program, a curator talk by Jonas Stampe of Sweden, and a lecture performance by Dr. Michael Barrett from the United States.
