Bangkok will celebrate the Loy Krathong festival on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, by opening 33 public parks across 21 districts for residents and visitors to join in the centuries-old Thai tradition of paying respect to the Goddess of the River. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced that parks will remain open from their regular hours until midnight (12:00), allowing families and communities to take part safely and conveniently close to home.
Preserving Tradition and Promoting Sustainability
The BMA’s initiative aims to honor Thai cultural heritage while promoting environmentally friendly practices. Participants are encouraged to use krathongs (floating offerings) made from natural materials like banana leaves and trunks, which decompose easily. Foam krathongs are strictly banned, and the city is discouraging the use of bread- or food-based floats, as leftover food can harm the water quality in the parks’ closed-system ponds.

In an effort to minimize waste, the BMA is continuing its “One Family, One Krathong” campaign, encouraging families to float a single krathong together instead of multiple ones.
For safety and order, sky lanterns, fireworks, firecrackers, and alcohol sales will not be permitted inside public parks. Offenders may face legal action.

Environmental Achievements
In 2024, the BMA collected 514,590 krathongs, and over 98% were made from natural materials, with only 1.6% made from foam—a 19.6% decrease compared with the number in 2023. These results highlight growing public awareness of eco-friendly practices during the festival.
Digital Loy Krathong Option
For those who prefer a sustainable celebration from home, the BMA is again offering the online Loy Krathong platform at greener.bangkok.go.th, available from five in the morning to midnight on November 5. Last year, 36,832 online krathongs were launched, along with 10,885 digital floats at interactive sites across the city.
According to the BMA, the campaign underscores Bangkok’s ongoing commitment to blending cultural tradition with environmental responsibility, ensuring that future generations can enjoy this beloved Thai festival in a cleaner, greener city.
