On Ao Phai, Samed Villa Resort sits between livelier Sai Kaew and the quieter bays to the south. Semi-detached concrete huts run down the hill among the trees. The rooms are rustic, from the beam ceiling to the eco-friendly amenity boxes. The resort was built in 1987, and it has been rebuilt and extended since.
Ko Samet is about 200 km southeast of Bangkok, and part of the island is inside Khao Laem Ya National Park. How far you walk to the sand depends on the room. Deluxe Sea View rooms are about 30 meters from a rocky shore. The rear rooms are about 150–200 meters back.

Huts on the slope, then a small block
Most rooms sleep two, with space for one more, and breakfast is included. You can usually take a king or two singles. Deluxe Garden View rooms are on the second row, about 40–50 meters from the beach. Superior Garden View rooms are about 70 meters out, on the second and third rows. Small Standard rooms are on the third row, about 70 meters back, and they’re for two people only. Superior Forest View is a king-bed bungalow about 150 meters from the beach, looking into the trees.
Families have three layouts. Superior Family Garden View is two connecting rooms for four, a king in front and two singles behind, each with its own bathroom. Standard Family rooms, in a two-story building about 50 meters from the beach, put a king and two singles in one room. Junior Family bungalows, on the third row about 50 meters back, have two bedrooms, one entrance, and a bathroom between them. Budget rear rooms are on the second floor of a three-story building, with a balcony toward the forest.

Simple fittings, and breakfast on the rate
Every room comes with the same easygoing basics: free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a fan, a hot and cold shower, a private digital safe, bath and beach towels, a mini fridge, and a tea and coffee set. There’s even a mosquito bat, a flashlight, and an umbrella, and each room has its own private bathroom.
An extra person is ฿750 a night, breakfast included. Children under 4 stay free if they sleep with their parents. A cot is ฿200 a night. Friday and Saturday add ฿300 a night, dropped if you stay seven nights or more. A holiday surcharge of ฿400 a night is always charged. The resort doesn’t take a one-night booking on Saturday (walk-in only), and a long weekend needs at least two nights.
Dining
A terrace by the sand, and dinner on the beach
The restaurant has indoor seating and a terrace right by the beach, and there are a few places to eat next door. The menu is Thai and Western, and the dishes it names are steak, Italian pizza, Thai curry, and barbecue. In the evening, dinner is served on the beach. Opening hours aren’t published.
Marina Bar pours cocktails, draft and bottled beer, wine, juices, and soft drinks. Vegetarian and vegan dishes aren’t marked, so ask before you order.
Beach and Spa
Massage in the house, or under the trees
Massages and scrubs are available in the resort’s traditional Thai wooden house, or on the beach in the shade of the trees. Treatments named on the facilities page include aroma relaxing, gold shimmering oil, head neck and back, aloe vera after sun, Thai massage, foot massage, herbal compress, Thai herbal steam with a body scrub and shower, and facials.
Staff set out beach chairs and umbrellas each morning, and that’s free. You can rent a kayak, a stand-up paddleboard, a safety vest, or a mask and fins. 🤿

Ao Phai, on the east coast of Ko Samet
The resort is directly on Ao Phai. Sai Kaew, the busier beach, is to the north, and the quieter bays run south. Ko Samet is about 200 km southeast of Bangkok, in Rayong. Open the map.
Part of the island sits in Khao Laem Ya National Park. The poet Sunthorn Phu wrote about this coast. Day to day, the beach in front of the huts is why you stay.
