Thailand is set to welcome its very first electric sightseeing tram powered entirely by clean energy, marking a new chapter in the country’s push toward sustainable tourism and green mobility.

The project, called “Chiang Mai Tram By Lannatique,” is a collaboration between Asset World Corporation (AWC), a leading lifestyle real estate-group, and Arun Plus Plc, a specialist in electric mobility solutions.

Designed around the theme “Innovative and Sustainable Tourism,” the tram will highlight Chiang Mai’s rich cultural landscape with a distinctive Lanna-inspired design. Running on two main routes around the city moat, it will connect visitors to over 40 key attractions, including Tha Phae Gate, Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan, Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan, Warorot Market, and The Pantip Lifestyle Hub, as well as popular restaurants, cafés, and community hotspots.

Beyond convenience, the tram aims to reduce inner-city traffic with a park-and-ride system, allowing travelers to leave their cars at AWC-affiliated hotels outside the old city, with more than 1,500 parking spaces available. Passengers will also enjoy modern comforts: the rubber-tire trams are equipped with air-conditioning and advanced air filtration capable of filtering harmful PM2.5 dust.

The tram is part of the larger “Lannatique” development in Chang Khlan district, envisioned as a lifestyle and cultural landmark. The project embraces the concept The Heart of Lanna Art Movement,” celebrating over 700 years of Lanna heritage through a contemporary art village that fuses tradition with modern creativity.

Both the Lannatique development and the Chiang Mai Tram are scheduled to open later this year, offering a greener, more immersive way for travelers to explore the city while honoring its deep cultural roots.
