The Thai Cabinet has approved a budget of 153 million baht for the Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2025, a grand celebration set to take place at Sanam Luang in Bangkok.
According to Anan Kaewkamnerd, director of the Budget Bureau, the funds will be drawn from the national emergency reserves for the 2025 fiscal year, following a proposal by the Tourism and Sports Ministry.
Scheduled from April 11 to 15, the festival aims to elevate the Songkran experience, particularly after UNESCO’s recent recognition of the Thai New Year as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Under the theme “Splashing Happiness with Water: Celebrating the Maha Songkran Festival,” the event will showcase vibrant parades, cultural performances, interactive water play zones, regional traditions from across Thailand, merit-making ceremonies, and the traditional water-pouring ritual to honor elders.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand anticipates that the festival will draw over 800,000 visitors and generate up to THB 3.2 billion in revenue.
