Thailand One of the Preferred Destinations Among Asian Weekenders

With Asia’s calendar dotted with public holidays and long weekends, a new travel trend is gaining ground: the rise of the “weekender.” According to recent data from digital travel platform Agoda, travelers across Asia are increasingly using extended weekends to plan short getaways, and Thailand continues to stand out as a top pick for these quick escapes.

As public holidays stack up across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, so too does travel activity. Agoda reports a significant surge in accommodation searches ahead of long weekends, particularly from travelers in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, who seem eager to make the most of their leisure time without venturing too far afield.

In fact, Agoda recorded an 80% month-on-month increase in accommodation searches from these three countries leading up to the Eid holiday period. While popular destinations included Japan, China, South Korea, and Taiwan, Thailand consistently ranked among the top. Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai continue to attract returning visitors and new explorers alike with their vibrant culture, ease of travel, and value-for-money offerings.

The pattern was similar during Thailand’s own Songkran holiday, which sparked outbound travel to places like Hong Kong, Osaka, Shanghai, and Seoul, yet also reinforced Thailand’s role as both a launching point and a destination of choice for regional travelers.

Meanwhile, during Vietnam’s recent long weekend (which combined Liberation Day and Labor Day), Agoda data showed Bangkok among the top-searched destinations, along with Singapore, Tokyo, and Seoul. The Thai capital’s appeal lies in its dynamic mix of shopping, street food, and urban adventure—all within easy reach for short-term visitors.

As the concept of travel continues to evolve in Asia, Thailand’s blend of accessibility, variety, and hospitality makes it a clear favorite for weekend wanderers looking to unwind, explore, and recharge without going far from home.
