Opened in 2003, Brown Rice by Neal’s Yard Remedies offers healthy vegan fare ‘in harmony with nature’ in a rustic-kitchen-style café. Based on traditional Japanese cuisine, with an emphasis on the four seasons, each dish is individually crafted using organic ingredients. There are three weekday set lunches to choose from, ranging from JPY 1,900 to JPY 2,200, or a special set that includes a drink and dessert of your choice for JPY 3,100, all served with the eponymous brown rice, as satisfyingly nutritious as it is delicious, which can be ordered as a small or large serving (it will take every ounce of your self-restraint to resist ordering the available extra helpings). Also on the menu are seasonal vegetarian side dishes, fair-trade coffee and organic herbal tea blends.

The upmarket yet relaxed hush of Neal’s Yard combined with its tasteful style and decor – from the kitchen dressers that line the back wall to the wooden spoons that accompany your meal – adds to the healthy-living experience, leaving you with the impression that the whole establishment is exuding that sense of clean-food goodness.
